Digestion: The 4 R's of Healing the Gut

Digestion is key to great health and about 90% of people I have worked with over the past 5 years have at least one digestive complaint. Thankfully, there are 4 areas to look to get your digestion working it's best so that you can enjoy your life without the pain and discomfort of digestive disturbance.

Keep in mind not everyone needs to do all of these things, talk to a qualifed health professional when starting a new health regime.

The Four R's of Healing the Gut.

  1. Remove offending foods from the diet. This means taking all processed foods and sugary drinks out of the diet. Focus on a whole foods, mostly plant based diet. Our bodies have evolved on a natural diet and when we put processed foods in, it doesn't know what do to with them and stores them as fat to protect our vital organs.

  2. Replace digestive enzymes and stomach acid where necessary. The Standard American Diet can be a drain on the natural enzymes and hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Symptoms like heart burn are more likely caused by low stomach acid than too much stomach acid. Avoid drinking too many fluids with your meals which dilutes the digestive juices that are working hard to break down your food so you can absorb it.

  3. Reincoulate the gut with pre and probiotics. Chlorinated water and antibiotics not only kill bad bacteria, they also kill your good bacteria. If the good bacteria isn't replaced, there is a greater opportunity for bad bacteria and parasites to take over the digestive system leading to brain fog, fatigue, and a host of other symptoms. The terrain theory states that the environment within the body is key to preventing germs, virus, and bacteria from establishing themselves, and healing faster after exposure. Adding a quality probiotic can help re-establish your healthy gut flora and improve your internal terrain.

  4. Regenerate the gastro-intestinal mucosa through proper nutritional support. Over time, when nutrition is poor the villi that line your intestinal tract can become damaged leading to things like ulcers and leaky gut. Herbs like Aloe Vera, Marshmallow, Licorice, and Slippery Elm can help soothe and heal the lining of the intestinal tract.

Your gut is often called your second brain so taking good care of it is key to both looking and feeling good.

Being healthy doesn't have to be a chore. Holistic Nutrition sees everyone as intimately interconnected and whole. Dietary choices are crucial, but we also look at lifestyle factors including perspectives on health, and relationships with self and others. Health is truly personal and it's about creating health from the inside out!
